Reflection

Flash back to all the post that I had posted, it indicates the knowledge I had gained. Being a blogger myself, writing a blog seems easy to me. However, writing a serious blog (as in this blog) is not as easy as it seems. There are rules and regulations to be followed.

Blog needs to be written in an ethical form. The reason is because "Pen is mightier than sword" (Marcus 2009), whereby everything that is written not only to convey messages to the readers, it also build a "trust" to the readers. Hence, each words to be written must be in the language that is accepted by all.

Besides, writing ethically is able to avoid defamation and copyright infringement. Pictures, phrases or words which adopted from other author and photographer have to be cited to prevent from being barred for copyright infringement. Thus,it  is a need to understand the "Law of Defamation" to prevent from getting suit (Bautista 2009).

Other than rules and regulations, of course to attract more readers, blog has to be interesting. Words and pictures have to be relevant to the topic to avoid confusion and misinterpretation from the readers. Finally, the design of background and color must comfort readers' eyes to keep them follow the post.

Broadcast Transcript 2: The Power of Photography

The word "Photography" was first discovered by Sir John F.W Herschel in 1939, it derived from the Greek word "photo" means light and "grahein" means to draw. The first photograph published in 1827 with the invention of camera followed the law of optic by Aristotle (Bellis).

Photography is the nostalgic of art and it act as "a sort of abstract history" (Caroline 1997). Based on the transcript reported by Heizmann, photograph is able to keep memory alive and it plays an important role in reminding people of what had happened in the past (espeacially during the war); thus, future generation will be able to prevent from repeating it.

Photograph is so powerful that it actually freezes the time to give the past a tangible form (Caroline 1997). Photograph represents an indexical sign where it is able to show people the real event that had happened (Peirce 1934); the real surface and the real faces of people or places involved.

Below a picture of Malaysia Independence in 1957 at Dataran Merdeka with Malaysia 1st Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj:

According to Huff 1998, every image does tell a story. Looking at the war photography, each photos (before, during and after war) can make up a story to be told to the future generation. Movies that we have been watching today (e.g. Pearl Harbour, World War II etc) are largely derived from the photos captured during the happening event.

It is the photos that announce their existence (Cadava 1992). Without photograph, even with the existence of narration, people would less likely to believe as they believed that words can be fake but photography never lie (Barthes 1982). It resembles the witness in spite of the photographer themselves (Bloch 1954)

However, Gary and Wade 2005 argued that with the advancement of technology today, photograph does lie. The power of "Photoshop" is able to make everything possible; pictures can be edited, background scenery can be changed etc.

Picture below shows the power of "Photoshop" (changing the background scenery):

My opinion

Although photography is important as it helps people to recall and visualize an event (Dobson & Marham 1993), however, words does matter. A photograph is only a still picture, different individual can have different thoughts and give different meaning to that picture. Hence, the opinion is subjective.

Thus, photograph and words have to come together to give a clear meaning to people without giving space for them to fill the gap and misinterpret the meaning of the picture.

Broadcast Transcript 1: E-book popularity on the rise

In the1990s, when Internet began to expand, it placed a drastic impact on many types of industry; book industry was not exceptional.

Study shows that the demand for traditional virtual book has started declining in 2009, following the global release of the Amazon Kindle book (a wireless reading device for e-book reading). People habit started to change; they demanded for more digital services. Publisher began to realize the importance of going online to survive (Cornwall 2010).

What is an e-book?
E-book is a text analogous to a book that is in digital form in which to be displayed on a digital devices (Lee 2002). Below is one of the devices used to read e-book:

 Digital Device: Amazon Kindle

The advantages of  reading an E-book?
  • Cheaper cost (Shih 2004)
    • E-book is relatively cheaper than virtual book because it requires no printing, shipping or storing cost.
  • Save space and convenient (Chu 2003)
    • A bookshelf is needed to keep the virtual book but for an e-book, files can be easily downloaded into different formats and be kept into a pen drive, computer hard-disk, CR-ROM, or in an iPod.
 VS.

  • Availability
    • Internet is available 24/7 a week (Anuradha & Usha 2006). Hence, readers are able to get an immediate access to the books (Dillion 2001) they wanted and to download the file at anytime, and everywhere.
 Source: Free e-book website
Click picture to enlarge
    • In contrast, readers needed to go to the bookshop to get a virtual book. It is time consuming and worst of all, not all bookshops have the availability of the particular book.

  • Navigability
    • An e-book provides hypertext link for readers to navigate to a particular website for more information (Shih 2004). Thus, it provides flexibility for readers to browse certain references.
    • Readers are able to read review before purchasing e-book or write a review after reading it.
Source: Free e-book website (readers review)
click picture to enlarge
    • It also provides full in-text searching. An example below of an e-book (PDF file):
E-book downloaded into PDF file format
Click picture to enlarge

  • Readability
    • Changes of physical form of a book affect the readability of the readers. Study shows that people read faster with e-book compared to virtual book (Pattuelli & Rabina 2009)
    • E-book makes readers easier to read as it provides various functions (e.g.different types of fonts)
    • Adaptable back lighting
      • Digital devices enable readers to adjust the back lighting to comfort their reading.
      • Conversely, a virtual book lighting depends on the places (in-house or outdoor) where the readers' reading.
  • Environmental Friendly
    • Today, people are going green and saving trees nationwide. E-book is thus a way to the preserve the environment as it requires no printing on papers.

Although there are many advantages of using e-book, there are numbers of readers who still prefer reading virtually. Consider those who live in rural area or poorer country, they might not have the special equipment to read the e-book and it incurs a high cost to buy that equipment. Besides, according to Adler the types of books offered online is limited. Thus, only certain readers could get their wanted books online.  In addition, few readers claimed that e-book is hard to read and browse compared to virtual book and that they are able to write notes on the virtual book but not with e-book (Chu 2003).

My Opinion

It would take a longer time for virtual books to emerge 100% into the digital world unless every individual worldwide is able to go online and more powerful devices are to be invented to eliminate the disadvantages mentioned above.

Article 2: How Newspaper Killed Itself (John C. Drowak)

Today, with the increasing number of people go online, the number of Newspaper readership declined. The reason is because newspaper is running out of local contents and many claims that it provides redundant news and more on political motivated headlines in an unbalanced and preached way (Drowak 2010)

In 2008, approximately of 120 newspaper companies in US shut down while others are reducing their publication (e.g 3 days a week) due to the decline in readership and numbers of readers who subscribe to their newspapers (Chen 2009).

Source: CNN.com web-page

However, a research  done by Dennen 2009 shows that following the fall of 12% of the overall readership of print media, online news readership increases 26%. This proven that people is still hunting for news, is their reading habits that changed from reading through old media (print newspaper) to new media (online news).

Generally, the newspaper industry is still holding the old concept in publishing their news by copying and pasting their print content. In contrast, online news uses publishing platform to create text, image, audio and video to attract readers attention while meeting their expectation (Joel 2010). Thus, readers are beginning to shift to non-newspaper sources of online news.

The advantages of Online News.

  • Free News Content
    • Bigger online companies (e.g. Yahoo, MSN and Google) is providing free news content for readers. Hence, there are option for readers to either pay for newspaper news or get it free from online news.
    • Research shows that 77% people will not pay for either print newspaper or online newspaper when they can get it for free on certain online page (Whitney 2010).
    • Online free news also provide free interactive tools such as polls and online voting.
    • Below  is the research shows the percentages of readers who read online:
 Source: pewresearch.org
  • Immediacy of Information
    • Online news is a best way to access various information and keep updated with the latest up-to-minutes news (William 2010).
    • Internet provide the greatest immediacy of information, with simple cue words and a click, all information that is needed will be on screen.
    • Below is the example from Google News Online:
  Source: Google News page

  •  Multimodal text (Walsh 2006)
    • Online news provide multimodal text where it combine various form of option for readers to choose either to read, listen or watch.
    • It combine both written and spoken form whereby it not only inform readers, it also engage to the readers with video.
    • Besides, it also allow readers to navigate to various sites.
    • Below are the examples from Yahoo and MSN which offer various form of news:

My Opinion

Apparently, internet has conquered the media world. All information that is published in the newspapers are made available in the internet and it offers even more for FREE. Hence, there is no doubt that old form of media especially newspaper faced an extreme huge challenged from the new media.

In order to survive in this technology world, newspaper companies would have to figure out something new, catches reader's attention and newsworthy for readers to buy or subscribe to their newspaper.

Article 1: Blogging is so Yesterday, Politician turn into Twitter (Syed Jaymal Zahiid)

If you have been following on my previous posting "New Form of Media Publishing," you would have come across micro-blogging and Twitter.

Internet is widely in use in today technology era. It is able to combine words and images in complex structure with logos, hyperlinks, video, graphic, music and more (Walsh 2006).

Recently, Twitter has become increasingly popular especially to the politician. Malaysia politician such as Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang and even our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak are actively on Twitter. Twitter has been designed specifically for mobile user following the increasing usage of digital devices (e.g. 3G mobile phones) whereby it enables user to post short posting (140 characters) and to spread fast reaching the target audiences.

Below is an example of Twitter User account

Click picture to enlarge

How does Twitter spread amongst the politician?

President of US Barrack Obama is the main reason most politician from nationwide starts to tweet. He has been spreading good word of mouth of using Twitter as a dynamic way to inform policies and a way to get the others involved (Maria 2010). He also makes the service appealing to ever politician by naming Twitter as a great way to establish Grassroot Campaign (Reisinger 2010).

Below are the Democratic of Twitter Gap in US (it all started in the US)

 Click picture to enlarge

Why Politician Tweet?

Normal users Tweets to share their daily experiences and opinions (Nardi et. al. 2004), politician in contrast, Tweets to keep their followers updated on the most recent issues and as a form to promote their blogs.

Twitter is a powerful yet inexpensive tools of media communication (Gilmor 2006).The old form of media such as newspaper, TV and radio are lacking of immediacy and interactivity between the politician and the readers. Twitter, conversely, is able to keep the readers "live" updated and readers could post comments to the politician opinion.

In Malaysia, the use of Twitter by politician was seen following the 2008 General Election. Both the opposition and ruling party began to post short messages keeping their voters updated on every event they organized.

Picture: Lim Kit Siang (opposition Party DAP) twitter

My Opinion

Although Twitter is vastly in used, blogging is still important. Twitter only provides snippet of information while blog contains more and in-depth information (Asia-new Buzz 2010). Short messages are sometimes risky and dangerous as they could create confusion to the readers. Readers might misunderstand certain content of the messages, hence, create unwanted demonstration.

As a result, we can see most politician who have Twitter account would like to their personal blog (e.g. Datuk Seri Najib Twitter, highlighted for more information visit my blog ..)

Good Design for Screen Genre

Document Design is a "physical appearance of a document" in which both text and image work together. (Reep D, 2006).

Why do we need a good design for screen document?
A good design for screen genre will keep readers' focus on the screen and  guiding them to understand the entire screen documents.

(Few critiques on my past IPD group assignment)

Balance is important to keep readers eyes focus on the screen. Good balance of screen should have a Page Balance in which all relevant slides should have the same weight in terms of wordings or graphic. Below showing Slide 12 and Slide 13; in which we notice the imbalance weight (slide 12 lesser words while slide 13 lengthy words)

Besides, Consistency is as well important. Noticed in Slide 4 and 5 below; both were not consistent whereby slide 5 contains no title to actually guide readers to where were they now while reading on the screen.

Graphic Aids helps providing a quick or immediate interpretation to the readers (Schriver,1997). For instance, Slide 10 and 11 below;

Larkin & Simons 1987, "Pictures can actually tells ten thousands words". Hence, instead of writing the description on Slide 11, Slide 10 can be verbally explained . Yet, readers immediate interpretation might drive misunderstand of the process. Therefore, thorough verbal explanation via diagram will enable readers to follow.

Lastly, as noticed, most of the slides' critique is word base. This could turn readers off the screen. Kress &Leeuwen 1998, graphic is indeed important to create salience to attract reader's attention.

New Forms of Media Publishing

As mentioned earlier in my post, micro-blogging has spread to the entire world without age limits (from youngster to elderly). The usage of  print media such as newspaper has fallen (Naughten J,2006). Electronic media such as Twitter has become increasingly used by people worldwide especially blogosphere.
Even Technorati uses twitter.

Twitters are used for several pruposes;
  • Promoting blogs
  • Business and Marketing
  • Political update
Recently in Malaysia, competition between both the opposition and the ruling party is getting more intense. Blogs are important to them to voice out their opinion that newspaper would not have. These blogs usually link to both facebook and twitter as their intention is to have more readers and follower. (e.g. Lim Kit Siang, Anwar Ibrahim blogs).

However, Twitter does not attract youngster and teenagers. Research shows although there were many teenagers who sign up for twitter account, only 8% of the teenagers used Twitter (Beesley S, 2010) while Facebook still the common social network (Seth, 2009). Apparently, Facebook have more function than Twitter does such as Photos Sharing, Games, Horoscope, Message and Friends Update rather than just short messages in Twitter.

Besides, teenagers claim that if there were to tweet using their mobile, they would rather just send an "SMS" to their peers due to credit constraint (TheMalaysiaInsider, 2010). They also claim that profile were not viewed by many people as most of their friends do not tweet and that they only received uninteresting tweet when they followed on certain tweets (Seth, 2009).

Blogging Communities & Methods to build Blogging Communities & Structure of Blogging Community

Blogging Community is where a group of blogger shares their interest, or of what they know beside adding in their comments and tagging to other followers (Nikki S). A blogging community is essential to keep your blog active in reader's attention.

Readers are important, without readers there will be no community. Ways to create a blogging community.
  1. Blog must be attractive. Title to capture reader's attention and content to keep them continues reading.
  2. Read other blogger blog (Nikki S) to search for the same interest sharing community.
  3. Use Link (Rowse D,2008) if you are adopting other blogger idea or writing about them which indirectly creates a good neighborhood around the blogosphere universe ( Brogan C, 2008) while keeping track of the their activities and make relevant comments on their blog  (Reed M, 2010).
  4. List your blog in directories (Brogan C, 2008) which helps to increase the number of readership
One also needs to know which types of blogging communities' best suite.

Topic Centric Community, well-known communities circulate around blogger today whereby blogger are connected through certain topic via links and relationship (Koterwas T, 2007). This group of blogger form by their interest shared and does not have a central location for if any one of the community falls would not affect the others (White N). For instance Baking Mum, blog on baking and cooking. At the right side of her blog stated her blogging pals (whom writes on the same topic) linking to them. This group of community often interacts via back-channel (e.g. MSN, Facebook etc)

Besides, 2 others form of community are;
  • Single Blog Community - A single blog with many writters (e.g. Wordpress)

  • Boundaries Community - Collection of blogs hosted on a single site (e.g. Edublogs)

Classification of Blogs & Opinion about the most appropriate Classification Approach

Today, blogging is becoming more important, more than 100 millions of blogs circulates around the world with different classifications (Gunelius S). The style, format and sometimes the name of the blog itself could actually show us which category it belong to. Lim Kit Siang blog is widely known as Political Blog by Malaysian and yes it is.

An interviewed with Margaret Simon claims that there are 10 types of blog exist today such as Pamphleteering, Advocacy, Popular Mechanics, Exhibition, Diary, Advertisement, News, Digest and more blog. (ABC media report 2008)

However, these blogs are hard to be recognized by the readers if not confusing. When she explained those blog function, apparently, we actually knows these blog regardless the unique name she'd given

    For example (adopted from wordpress.com & slideshare.net)
